Overview

Mosaic, a leading US financing platform that helps homeowners to pay for energy-efficient home improvements, formed a strategic partnership with intive to enhance its technology platform and create high quality digital assets.

With great growth potential, Mosaic’s platform demands constant maintenance and refinement. This means developing next-generation financial products and integrating with diverse ecosystem partners, such as homeowners, financial institutions, solar panel installers, and home improvement distributors and suppliers.

Making this robust technological network a reality required deep technical expertise and a sizeable engineering team – and thus began Mosaic’s alliance with intive.

Client

As a pioneer in the clean energy financing industry, Mosaic provides a fast and easy way to apply for green loans, making sustainable home improvements accessible and affordable for U.S. homeowners. From solar panels to energy-efficient windows, there are an increasing number of ways that homeowners can lower their energy consumption bills and help combat the climate crisis.

Building a single collaborative team

In December 2017, intive and Mosaic formed their strategic partnership, with more than 30 Argentinian developers joining Mosaic’s team. Working together on building the systems needed to run the green financing platform, the team has embraced digital innovation and overcome many challenges along the way.

intive works closely with Mosaic’s product and development teams, defining the scope of software development projects, creating innovative digital products, maintaining the required systems, and evolving the platform’s architecture to improve its performance. The team delivers new features aimed at enhancing the user experience, from the moment that homeowners request a loan until their solar panel is installed.

Expert Consultancy for Building State-of-the-Art FinTech Solutions

For the past five years, intive engineers have delivered some of Mosaic’s key value propositions, including the re-implementation of the public API, key integrations with financial institutions through APIs, and the release of new, cutting-edge financial products.

By carefully listening to Mosaic’s needs, intive proposes new technologies and methodologies that enable collaborative decision-making with a common goal. Expert consultancy is essential to building state-of-the-art FinTech solutions, providing key input in instrumental areas such as front-end development, back-end development, integration of external services, and off-the-shelf software modules to implement critical business processes. In-house expertise also provides significant contributions at all stages, from the architectural to the implementation level.

A smooth migration to microservices

In order to evolve the platform, streamline processes, and be ready to scale up the business, Mosaic and intive developed a new architecture based on microservices, to which they are currently migrating from the initial monolith. This long-term transformation allows developers to quickly deploy, test, and upgrade each service individually. Meanwhile, APIs facilitate data interchange across various microservices.

The engineering team redesigned the legacy backend and prepared an end-to-end migration process with production support. This challenge involved rewriting many stages, starting from defining the number of environments needed in production and redesigning the pipeline, up to the development of UX/UI, data migration, and implementation services.

The team carries out the transition from monolith to microservices using a project-based approach, performing the migration for a particular development at the time the business requires it.

From door-to-door sales to landmark integrations

Prior to 2020, providing clean energy home improvements was done through one-on-one interactions: the installer would knock on the homeowner’s door and offer them a loan. However, the pandemic dramatically impacted on this sales model. Switching to Mosaic’s digital platform became the clear path forward for both sellers and buyers.

Third-party integrations paved the way for accelerated business growth. New connections with financial institutions, external scoring engines, and contractor partners allowed Mosaic to leverage diverse opportunities for expansion in the space.

Thanks to intive’s expert support and guidance, Mosaic has also been able to launch the second version of its public API, representing a major milestone for the company. This development has brought in companies that group together new solar panel installers. Acting as intermediaries between homeowners and providers, installers are now able to apply for credit and receive payments through the API.

With streamlined procedures to apply for financing, families are easily referred by solar installers, as well as other ecosystem partners. This significantly shortens the wait time to get a credit decision for deposit-free loans with fixed interest rates and multiple-term options.

Driving the transition to solar power

With the mission to empower millions of people to prosper by creating the most simple and affordable way to finance clean energy, Mosaic has experienced incredible growth, driven by an enhanced digital system that has become more flexible and reliable over time.

Since 2012, Mosaic has helped more than 160,000 homeowners to switch to sustainable home solutions. In fact, in November 2022, the company surpassed $10 billion in green loans funded through its platform.

intive and Mosaic’s partnership has encouraged the quick expansion of solar adoption and consequently had a positive impact on all the actors involved: from households improving their homes with eco-friendly solutions to solar panel manufacturers and installers.

Having experienced a growth boom since the pandemic, residential solar loan volumes are expected to continue increasing in 2023 and beyond. Mosaic and intive will continue to co-create tailor-made solutions to support this impressive growth and address new challenges, all the while helping to fight the climate crisis through clean energy.
