Rossmann, one of Germany’s largest drugstore chains, wanted to create a mobile solution that simplifies couponing, provides real-time offers, and ensures an easy and intuitive experience for customers. To bring this vision to life, Rossmann partnered with intive.

The Challenge

In 2016, Rossmann chose intive, one of the DACH region's most experienced companies in design and development, to build native iOS and Android apps based on Rossmann's existing online and in-store ecosystem.

The project presented two significant challenges. The first was managing complex technical integration. The app needed to synchronize with multiple backend systems and incorporate Rossmann’s physical cashier infrastructure to enable features like coupon scanning and redemption.

The second challenge was ensuring an intuitive, seamless user experience for Rossmann's diverse customer base. The app had to cater to a wide audience with varying levels of digital familiarity while maintaining high accessibility and joy-of-use.

To address these needs, intive's Design and Architecture teams conducted extensive user testing and took an agile development approach, fostering close collaboration to ensure that the app’s complex components worked together flawlessly.

The Solution

intive led the end-to-end design, development, and quality assurance, focusing on a seamless, intuitive, and user-friendly experience. With the Rossman Coupining App, customers can:

- browse current offers and digital coupons at any time
- receive personalized coupons and offers that fit their individual needs, based on
tracked behavior and buying habits
- save digital coupons to a customized customer card

- scan and save paper coupons
- access exclusive membership-based offers
- redeem discounts by scanning a QR code at checkout – no internet connection or account setup required

…all within one convenient platform.

Additionally, members of the Rossmann babywelt ("babyworld") can receive their coupons automatically. The app also features classic e-commerce functionalities, such as a store locator and access to the Rossmann newsletter.

With tens of millions used coupons, more than 700,000 Apple App Store ratings with an average of 4.7 Stars, the app has become one of the biggest mobile success stories in the market.  

The Impact

Thanks to its collaboration with intive, Rossmann has delivered a cohesive, cross-channel shopping experience that seamlessly integrates with the company's POS systems, setting a new benchmark for digital transformation in retail.

This innovation not only enhanced the in-store experience but also positioned Rossmann as a pioneer in the retail industry, launching a full-fledged mobile loyalty app back in 2017. At the time, this made Rossmann one of the first in the market to offer such an advanced digital solution.

By staying ahead of the curve, Rossmann solidified its position as a forward-thinking industry leader.

The Rossmann Couponing App is available for download on iOS through the Apple App Store and on Android through Google Play.
